Recording of Courageous Opposition to Totalitarianism in Latin America
This presentation focused on the life and legacy of Saint Oscar Romero, a Catholic bishop and martyr who advocated for social justice in El Salvador. Next a presentation followed on current human rights issues in Latin America. Discussions covered Romero’s transformation from a conservative bishop to a vocal advocate for the poor, his assassination, and his enduring impact as a symbol of faith and resistance against tyranny. The meeting addressed the deteriorating human rights situation in various Latin American countries, emphasizing the need for continued support for human rights defenders and the importance of upholding democratic values in the face of growing authoritarianism.
Courageous Opposition to Totalitarianism in South America
The Networks for Church Reform are managing a series of discussions on the role of Christians who have opposed dictatorial Governments. The initiative is led by Catholic Church Reform International. With the rise of autocracies, it is vital that Christians are alert to the dangers they pose. Presentations have examined the life and ministry of Fr Maximilian Kolbe and Sr Restituta Kafka, of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Fr Max Metzger.
On Wednesday 21st May the life and example of Archbishop Oscar Romero will be considered with a presentation by Julian Filochowski. Co-chair of the Romero Trust. Others with experience of life in Latin America will be involved.
Courageous Opposition to Nazism
There is an urgency, and we need to be committed to the moral imperative to stand against injustice and oppression. We can be inspired by the courage of those who defied Nazism.
The call is for bold action in the face of today’s crises, naming the suffering in Gaza, the erosion of democracy in the U.S., and widespread global injustices.
Silence is not an option.
Communities of faith need to speak out fearlessly.
Election of New Pope to begin May 7, 2025
The individual elected pope, Benedictine Father Donato Ogliari said, “must courageously and gently bear the weight of the church, advance without fear in the challenges of the present time, and be for all a living sign of the Lord’s merciful closeness.”
During the general congregations, or “pre-conclave” meetings, cardinals receive meditations to help prepare them for their future decision. In his meditation on April 29, Father Ogliari outlined the spiritual qualities the next pope should embody, a portrait the cardinals will consider when they gather in conclave beginning Wednesday, May 7.
To guide the cardinals spiritually, Ogliari urged them to center their choice on Christ and be led by the Holy Spirit. He also reminded them of the crucial impact their decision would have on the future of the church, while emphasizing the need for the cardinals to remain open to the challenges of the contemporary world. “Even though the place of the ‘conclave’—as the term itself indicates—is a place locked away, it will, in reality, be wide open to the entire world.”
Establishing and Supporting Pastoral Councils for both Dioceses and Parishes
In this presentation, Sr. Donna Ciangio, Chancellor to Cardinal Tobin in Newark, New Jersey, offered a step-by-step guide to setting up diocesan and parish pastoral councils. Sister used PowerPoint slides, which you can save and use to set up a new council or adjust existing councils that need to be more inclusive of lay representation in your community.
The Rise and Detrimental Development of Nazism in Germany
In this session, it became clear that the Catholic and Lutheran Churches played a significant role in promoting Hitler. After looking at the similarities that concern us that we are once again repeating history, participants then shared ideas among themselves of what we might do as Christians, since we are called by virtue of our baptism to stand up to injustices affecting innocent victims and those being inappropriately persecuted.
Continuing our series 1933 Germany: Are we as Catholics repeating history?
For those who missed it, we encourage you to listen to the recording of our introductory presentation exploring similarities between the rise of Adolf Hitler during Nazism and the rise of Donald Trump under the current U.S. administration:...

1933 Germany, are we repeating history?
The entire world is being impacted by what is happening under the current U.S. Government’s administration. To remain silent is to be complicit with what is happening around us. As Christians, we must stand up for and protect the vulnerable and marginalized.
The question we are asking about the current U.S. Government’s policies is: Are repeating this history of 1933 Germany?

Proposed Constitution for the Catholic Church
In memory of John Wijngaards passing and on behalf of the Wijngaards Institute for Catholic Research, Dr. Luca Badini Confalonieri will present their proposed Constitution for the Catholic Church.
Aspects of this proposals address some of the challenges facing the Church today. This will ultimately be carried to Rome during the 2025 Jubilee Year.
Looking back over 2024 and ahead to 2025
We saw 2024 as the year that we had the power to take steps toward bringing about changes in the Church. However, we grasped that it wouldn’t happen unless we, the people, make it happen.
We’ll use this post as a starting point for 2025!
Report on a process for clergy and laity Selecting their own Bishop
Now that the 2024 Final Document of the Synod has endorsed having clergy and laity involved in the selection of bishops, a worldwide meeting was held Saturday, December 14, 2024 to explore possible approaches for how this process might take place.
An Invitation For All Clergy
Laity are encouraged to invite priests in their own parish or diocese to join this online discussion and to offer their experience in forming criteria for the selection of bishops. The appropriate time to implement this process is upon a vacancy occurring or a bishop reaching retirement age of 75.
Clergy Is Invited
Now that the 2024 Final Document has expressed a desire to see more laity involved in the selection of bishops, clergy and laity must move forward on this process. We are inviting clergy globally to join in an online discussion to explore their partnering with the laity in establishing a process for the selection of bishops.
Selection of our Bishops
All are encouraged not to wait for some instruction from the hierarchy. If this change is to occur, it is up to the leadership of the laity to step forward. Often this will be from the diocesan or parish council but, if these don’t exist, then it is up to leaders in the parish or the community.
Final Report for the 2024 Synod
The 52-page document, which was approved by 355 synod members in attendance, outlines the proposals reached by consensus for Church renewal.
Vaticanelle
VATICANELLE is a parody with seven Women bishops and Pope Sister Martha in a Synod of Bishops discussing if men could be ordained. After a long discussion a clear decision is made:
Ad Experimentum suitable men will be ordained as priests and deacons in those communities that wish to take this opportunity.
The motion is approved by a vote 6 – 2.

The Holy Shakeup Comes to Rome

Reports from the Ground in Rome
The highlight of the presentations during the We Are Church Int’l meetings was Vaticanelle – parady play of an all female hierarchy weighing the requests from men to be accepted into the prieshood.
Meetings Too!
The meetings were led by Colm Holmes and Martha Heizer and included We are Church Germany, Austria, Italy, Ireland, UK, Scotland, Pakistan, and U.S. among others.
Becoming a Synodal Church
It is our hope that Synod delegates will be emboldened by the Gospel to advocate for women’s equality and gender equity so that a path toward credible synodality can be initiated at this Synod with the urgency it requires. Guided by the Holy Spirit, may it be so.
Oceana Continental Report
Synodality is alive and well in Oceana.
People appreciated the opportunity to be heard and took seriously their call to share roles and act co-responsibly, and the opportunity to review existing structures.
There is a strong sense of the church being a vehicle for empowerment of peoples to address critical issues and improve the well-being of all.
Report on the Empowerment of Local Church Communities
The 2023 Synthesis Report encourages more involvement of the laity and the entire community in discernment and decision making within their own community. To further explore this topic, this was a panel presentation on just three of the ways for the laity to participate in the decision-making in their community and sharing best practices where this is already being implemented.
Latin American Continental Report
We have been gifted with information from three prominent Latin American reformers involved in Church and societal reform: Fr. Peter Hughes, Birgit Weiller, MM, and Olga Consuelo Vélez. It is important to note that 40% of the world’s Catholics live in Latin America.
North American Continental Pre-synod Session
There must be openness to listen to all our fellow pilgrims on this journey and to all topics of concern for our Church to be truly synodal. When one holds sacred space to truly listen, one affirms and validates others for who they are. This builds the trust needed for the marginalized (women, LGBTQ+, divorced & remarried, etc.) to respond to the invitation to speak
Report of the African Continental Presentation
African bishops have come to realize that use of the internet for evangelization requires greater attention, in part because young people have become so engaged with social media but also because youth in rural areas do not have equal access, thereby creating a “digital divide.”
The bishops are determined not to leave anyone out.
National Conversation in the Spirit
Thanks to all who participated in this synodal gathering. Without exception, everyone who joined honored the format of this Conversation in the Spirit.
The reports underscore the significance of a proactive approach in the Church’s mission, emphasizing the need for accountability, prayer, and unwavering support for Pope Francis.
Report on the Selection of Church Leadership
Bishops are expected to be witnesses to the faith of their local church. The best way to ensure this is by having bishops who are democratically elected by the local churches.

Final CCRI Report To Go To The Synod Office
Thanks to all who participated in any of our online Synodal gatherings and especially those who contributed to the fine-tuning of this report. The most significant feature of this report is that it is truly a consensus of cross-generational, cross-continental, and, of course, cross-cultural reflections of Catholics, both practicing and no longer practicing.

With The Greatest Gratitude
Your presence and participation were greatly appreciated as we worked on the final document to submit to the Synod Office in Rome. As the “elders” in this process, we recognize that all of you are the future of our Church that Jesus began during His time on this earth.

Congratulations to the German Bishops for standing with their People

Start a synodal gathering in your region
Pope Francis has presented us with an extraordinary opportunity to speak out about the kind of Church we’d like to see today. It is our belief that his invitation to us to gather in small groups and share our stories offers far more hope for Church reform than even Vatican II back in the 60s. Pope Francis wants to hear from practicing Catholics, of course. But even more, he wants to hear from those who’ve walked away from the institutional Church, from other denominations, from men and women young and old. He wants to hear stories of how people have been hurt and what drove some away along with suggestions for how the situation(s) could have been better handled by the Church. We encourage you to join a synod offered by your bishop, pastor, or Small Christian Community. If none are being offered in your community, then consider starting your own.
WHOSE FAMILIES ARE THEY ANYWAY?
# chhotebhai This piece has been inspired by two recent events. This morning (4th July), I read that “nice guy” Amir Khan was divorcing Kiran Rao, his second wife, of over a decade. The previous day I had read a Vatican News report by Devin Watkins that Pope Francis...

FORTY EUROS FOR A RED HAT
# chhotebhai The red hat is synonymous with cardinals. I have no idea of the cost of such a hat in Rome; whether the cardinals have to purchase their own, or they are presented to them by the Pope. However, the tag of Forty Euros (E40) is the limit that Pope Francis...
DECALOGUE SIX & BOOK SIX
# chhotebhai Lest one go into sixes and sevens over this title; it was occasioned by a recent headline in the Times of India that read “New Vatican Law criminalizes sexual abuse by priests, laity”. It was referring to Decalogue Six, the sixth commandment, “You shall...

A PENTECOSTAL CATHOLIC
# chhotebhai Does this sound like an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms? Is it possible to be both a Pentecostal and a Catholic, when there is so much animosity between the two? I have another question, as we prepare for celebrating the feast of Pentecost. Where was...

Two Part Training
One of the biggest challenges to creating a synodal parish is positional thinking, i.e. sides each holding on to their position so strongly that each one is unable to really listen and learn from the other side. This training session helps address this issue and offer guidance how to move past this obstacle to holding the belief that maybe, just maybe, each of us has something more to learn about all of this. This can be done without ever letting go of your true and deepest values as a person. Both instruction and application are indluded in this two-part training program
